"A wise man will hear, and will increase
learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels"
(Proverbs 1:5)"The fear of the
LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and
instruction" (Proverbs 1:7)
"My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and
hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto
wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after
knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her
as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou
understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. For the
LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.
" (Proverbs 2:1-6)
"When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and
knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; Discretion shall preserve thee,
understanding shall keep thee" (Proverbs 2:10-11)
"Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the
midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves."
(Matthew 10:16)
Christ was saying to His apostles "I send you, inoffensive and harmless,
into a cold, unfriendly, and cruel world. Your innocence will not be a
protection." Serpents have always been an emblem of wisdom and
cunning. The Egyptians used the serpent in their hieroglyphics
as a symbol of wisdom. Probably the thing in which Christ
directed his followers to imitate the serpent was in its caution in
avoiding danger. No animal equals them in the rapidity and
skill which they evince in escaping danger. So said Christ to
his disciples, You need caution and wisdom in the midst of a world that
will seek your lives. He directs them, also, to be harmless,
not to provoke danger, not to do injury, and thus make their fellow-men
justly enraged against them. Doves are, and always have been,
a striking emblem of innocence. Most people would foolishly
destroy a serpent, be it ever so harmless, yet few are so hard-hearted as
to kill a dove.
